‘starry night’ by Nicki Blake

I half expect
the largest coil
to unfurl at speed
crack like a whip
fling me out to its tip
to flail among the stars
an instant of exposure
vacuum, brilliance, radiation
the dazzle and the burn
the pain of sharp return
yanked back to earth
like I was never gone
a time-traveller
confusing then and now
they’d think me mad
if I tried to explain
the force that spun me upwards
has pulled me down again
